Lasik Q & A

What is LASIK?

If you have trouble with your vision, you may be tired of glasses and contact lenses. Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) provides long-lasting vision correction for people with impaired vision. LASIK surgery is an excellent treatment for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and much more.

LASIK is a simple outpatient procedure. During your surgery, your provider uses lasers to reshape the cornea, a structure inside your eye. This surgery helps focus light onto the retina, providing clearer vision.

How do I know if LASIK is right for me?

Before you can schedule your surgery, you need an in-depth evaluation. The Yardley Vision Care team checks your eyesight and determines whether LASIK is right for you. During your consultation, your provider reviews all your treatment options.

If you decide to undergo LASIK, Yardley Vision Care provides a referral. You receive your procedure at an approved LASIK surgery center. Yardley Vision Care provides post-operative and follow-up care after your surgery.

How does LASIK work?

Many people are nervous about undergoing LASIK, but the procedure is simple and pain-free. First, you receive eye drops to numb your eyes. You may also receive medication to help you relax.

Next, your provider positions your eye under the LASIK device. A special instrument keeps your eyelids open and prevents eye movement. Your provider then uses the laser to reshape your cornea.

During the procedure, you may hear clicking sounds. Your provider may also ask you to look at a light or focus your eyes on a specific location.

Once your provider finishes your first eye, they repeat the procedure on the other. Each procedure takes about five minutes.

Is LASIK safe?

LASIK is a low-risk procedure. Most patients experience no pain during their procedure, but you may experience minor itching or burning sensations immediately afterward.

Some patients also report blurry or hazy vision after their procedure. These side effects usually clear up within a few days. Serious complications from LASIK are rare.

LASIK is not suitable for children or people with certain vision problems. If you’re not a good candidate for LASIK, the team can help you choose an alternate treatment. Your provider may suggest myopia control or orthokeratology (Ortho-K). These treatments use contact lenses to reshape your cornea.

What results can I expect?

LASIK results can vary, but most people experience a significant improvement in their vision. Many LASIK patients notice results within a few days.

In some cases, you may need to continue wearing glasses or contacts, but your prescription will be much lower than before. Many patients can give up their glasses or contacts altogether.
